'As a painter I am interested in how the culture and language of painting is historically framed and where rumination on that history leaves the contemporary practioner and indeed the practice of painting. My paintings respect and believe in the tenets of modernist abstraction, but also recognise their fallibilty. They neither re-stage the arguments and developments of modernist painting, nor revel in post-modern irony. They, and I, speak with a divided mind.'
The Indiscipline of Painting argues that abstract painting is an ongoing site of wide-ranging enquiry. It is not confined by parameters that constitute a discipline. During the curated exhibition I became more informed of what abstract painting was or could be. The artists in the exhibition not only explore contemporary social and cultural contexts, but also reflect the shifting histories of abstract painting. The idea for the exhibition was developed by the artist Daniel Sturgis who has been making abstract paintings for nearly twenty years. Sturgis is interested in the relationship between decoration, narrative and abstraction. He examines the ways in which different responses or interpretations can be provoked and projected through a two-dimensional image.
